Nov 05, 2013  Traktor has many great features, some they tell you about, some they don't. Even after I have been scouring the preferences and settings of Traktor for the last few years, I am always learning new things. This week I was reminded of the archive feature for old playlists. Pull up all your Traktor Session Thanks. Mar 21, 2016 This feature is not available right now. Please try again later. TRAKTOR SCRATCH is now included in TRAKTOR PRO 3, right out of the box. Best mac specs to run ableton. This means that DVS DJs using timecode vinyl can now use any soundcard they like, in addition to tried and tested, TRAKTOR SCRATCH Certified soundcards and mixers.

Vinyl emulation software allows the user to physically manipulate the playback of digital audio files on a computer using the turntables as an interface, thus preserving the hands-on control and feel of DJing with vinyl. This has the added advantage of using turntables to play back audio recordings not available in phonograph form. This method allows DJs to scratch, beatmatch, and perform other turntablism that would be impossible with a conventional keyboard-and-mouse computer interface or less tactile control devices. The technology is also mainly referred to as DVS for Digital Vinyl System.

Overview[edit]

Vinyl emulation normally uses special vinyl records which are played on conventional turntables. The vinyl is a recording of analog audio signals often referred to as timecode. The turntables' audio output - the timecode recording - is routed into an analog-to-digital converter, or ADC. This ADC may be a multi-channelsoundcard or a dedicated external USB or firewire audio interface box, DJ controller device or compatible mixer (usually distributed with the software). The ADC sends digital time code information to the software, which then translates the signal into corresponding changes in the playback speed, direction and position of a digital audio file. The audio file will react as if were pressed directly onto the record. The manipulated audio output of the program is then sent back through the DAC or the computer's sound card, and can be routed into an audio mixer where it can be mixed like any other analog audio signal.

The result is digital audio playback that sounds like music manipulated by an analog vinyl recording. However, there is always a short delay between the needle's reading of the time code and the software's playback of the audio. The delay time is treated as a figure of merit for vinyl emulation products. A shorter delay allows the DJ to have better response and control of the music and is usually not noticeable by the user or listener.

In some countries, for example Finland, a digital DJ license is required to legally play copyrighted music with vinyl emulation software.

Software packages[edit]

Final Scratch was the first vinyl emulation software sold publicly. Since its release in 2001, many similar software and hardware packages have been developed and marketed.

Native Instruments is a developer, manufacturer, and supplier of music software and hardware for music production, sound design, performance, and DJing. The company's corporate headquarters and main development facilities are located in Berlin, Germany, with additional offices in Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Paris, and Shenzhen.[3]

History[edit]

Native Instruments was founded in Berlin, Germany, where its headquarters are still located.[3] Founders Stephan Schmitt and Volker Hinz began using the name Native Instruments in 1996, when they developed Generator, a modular synth software package (which would later form the foundations for their ongoing product, Reaktor).[4]

Following the release of Generator, the company's employees expanded to include Bernd Roggendorf (later a founder of Ableton) and Daniel Haver, who later became Native Instruments' CEO.[4]

In 1999, Native Instruments expanded their staff count and moved to their current building in Berlin's Kreuzberg district.[4]

In 2000, the company began creating products for the DJ community, beginning with the first version of their Traktor software.[5] In 2002, they expanded further to include software samplers, in the form of ongoing products Kontakt and Battery.[4]

In September 2004, the company began a partnership with the DJ hardware manufacturing company Stanton Magnetics and with online music storeBeatport.[6] 2004 also saw the release of their guitar amplifier and effects pedal emulation software, Guitar Rig.[4][7]

Native Instruments now also has branches in Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Paris, and Shenzhen.[3]

Products[edit]

Software[edit]

Software produced by Native Instruments includes the following:

  • Reaktor: A visual programming environment based on modules and wires.[8] Several of Native Instruments products were built using Reaktor, including Monark – NI's emulation of the Moog Model D. In addition to the company's own offerings, it also hosts a large collection of community creations on the Reaktor User Library.
  • Kontakt: A software sampler with support for users to program their own virtual instruments.[9]
  • Guitar Rig: A modular software effect processor, focused on amplifier and effects pedal emulation for guitar.[10]
  • Multiple software synthesizers, such as Massive (wavetable-based),[11] Absynth (semi-modular),[12] and FM8 (frequency-modulation-based).[13]
  • Traktor: Digital DJ and vinyl emulation software.[14]

Native instruments also produce a number of other sample libraries, virtual instruments and effects processingplug-ins, many of which function through the architecture of Reaktor or Kontakt. Some of these software items are also grouped together in their Komplete software bundle.[15]

The company also develops the Native Kontrol Standard (NKS), a plug-in extension which allows integration with Kontrol and Maschine products (both hardware and software).[16]

Native instruments also produce music hardware, such as:

  • Maschine: A system with integrated software for creating drum beats.[17]
  • Kontrol: A series of MIDI keyboards, XLR Audio Interfaces and DJ controllers with software instrument support.[17][18][19]
